Elämyksiä joulupukin kotikaupungissa

The Arctic Circle runs through the southern end of Lapland. Along its axis is the city of Rovaniemi, whose population of 60,000 makes it the largest population hub near the Arctic Circle. It’s no wonder that Santa Claus himself has chosen the city as the location of his post office. Beyond Mr. Claus and reindeer, Rovaniemi contains several other noteworthy cultural treasures.

Travel by car during the early afternoon to the Santa Claus Village – this magical wonderland of ice sculptures, workshops, fairy lights and elf shows introduces you to Santa Claus himself. Meet his helpers in an underground grotto and send mail home from here with the unique Arctic Circle postmark. You can partake of a festive and hearty lunch in the cosy village restaurant before returning to the hotel.

Uusi tutkimus osoittaa metsätalouden ilmastovaikutukset arvioitua suuremmiksi – Professori: "Käytämme luonnonresurssia vähän hullulla tavalla"

Rovaniemi also offers some of the most unique ways of viewing the Auroras in the region too. Like Aurora Ice Floating, for example. Simply don the high tech rescue suit and lay back in the ‘pool’ cut especially in the ice of a nearby river. Or how about a Northern Lights flight? The one hour flight in a small aircraft will give you a totally different perspective of the dancing lights.

Core values, together with a Living Story, depict Rovaniemi’s unique characteristics, values and modes of action which are distinguished from the masses and are what we have to offer. They are used as internal markers, for example in considering what type of projects we should undertake and what kind of communication we want to implement. Basic values should be seen as an entirety which, when presented as a whole, describes our position as a City of Living Stories.

Ensimmäiseen päiväämme Rovaniemellä mahtui tutustuminen uuteen NOVASKYLAND-hotelliin ja -ravintolaan. Ravintolan huikeat herkut veivät kielen mennessään. Aivan Novaskylandin viereen on rakennettu SNOWMAN WORLD, jonka mustiin (kuva yllä) kotamaisiin asuntoihin majoittuu siten että maisema tulee osaksi sisätilaa lasiseinän kautta.

Kyse on pinnan alle menevistä ihmissuhteista, joiden tiedän saavan uusia kerroksia ajan mittaan.

Winter Getaway to Rovaniemi in Lapland

A museum and a science, also known as Arktikum, focuses on the history and culture of Lapland and Arctic life. Lapland is where the indigenous Sami people have lived for at least 5000 years up till now. The Sami are the only people of Scandinavia recognized and protected under the international conventions of indigenous peoples. They have their own culture, traditions, and even a language.

Just across the majestic Lumberjack’s Candle Bridge, on the slopes of Ounasvaara Hill, families will find an adventure park that features eight different tree-top courses of varying difficulty. Perhaps tree-top is stretching it a bit; the courses are at most seven metres above the ground. Adventurers move between living trees using ropes, beams, bridges and nets that are spanned from tree to tree. The adult courses requires participants to be over 130cm (4’3”) tall, while the kids course is for those over 110cm or 3’6”.

It was Arctic, Finland November 2016. Snowstorms in Helsinki, below -10°C degrees in Lapland, trains and planes delayed because the cold and snow, and for whatever reasons. And I was delayed from everywhere too, because the phone decided to freeze and because the sparsely build Finnish cities managed to surprise me, after months abroad in these cozily arranged Swiss towns.

How to get to Rovaniemi & Santa Claus Village

World War II hit Finland, and especially Rovaniemi, pretty hard. There wasn’t much left of the city. In 1950, with the rebuilding process in full swing, Eleanor Roosevelt, the wife of US President Roosevelt, came to see Rovaniemi. Supposedly, the purpose of the visit was to see how post-war aid was helping Rovaniemi rebuild. Eleanor Roosevelt, however, was very fond of Santa Claus and requested a visit with Santa himself. The Finns put up a wood cabin in less than a week, right where they measured the Arctic Circle would be and set up a Santa’s office.
